End of an Era: Apple Discontinuing Last iPod Model
By Paige Boyd, Managing Editor
It seems like yesterday when carrying music wherever you go in a small digital box-like structure was a new concept. Heck, we were still getting used to carrying around our bulky CD players in our pocket without messing up. Little did we know, it was the beginning of music's digital age: uploading your favorite music in a digital file, slipping right into your jean jacket. At the forefront was Apple's iPod, bringing mp3s to the masses.
And now, the iPod is heading in its final resting place, in a plot next to the cassette tape and 8-track.
As reported by CNN Business, Apple has announced that it will discontinue its last iPod model, the iPod Touch, which will be available "while supplies last." Of course, you can still listen to music through other Apple products, including the iPad, the iPhone and Apple Watch...but still, it's definitely the end of an era for the tech giant.
"Music has always been part of our core at Apple, and bringing it to hundreds of millions of users in the way iPod did impacted more than just the music industry -- it also redefined how music is discovered, listened to, and shared," Greg Joswiak, Apple's senior vice president of worldwide marketing, said in a statement. He adds that "the spirit of iPod lives on" through the technology being integrated into its other products.
Introduced by late Apple co-founder and former CEO, Steve Jobs, the iPod was a huge success, drawing customers with its signature scroll wheel and the initial promise of holding "up to 1,000 CD-quality songs" on a device that fits in your pocket. By mid-2007, more than 100 million iPod devices were sold. However, with the iPhone introduced that same year, and technology advancing in nanoseconds, it was only a matter of time before the iPod would become a thing of the past.
And now, that time has come. R.I.P. to the iPod.
At least we will still have the memories of listing to "Soulja_Boy_Pretty_Boy_Swag.mp3" on repeat together.
