BLACK DOCTORS MATTER: Entrepreneur Launches Black Healthcare Directory
By Paige Boyd, Managing Editor
As we all know, due to the ongoing biases against African Americans continue in the medical field, the need for Black healthcare professionals is dire. Thankfully, one entrepreneur is looking to make the search for them easier.
Recently, entrepreneur Marcia Paige launched MelaninRx, a digital directory of "culturally competent doctors, medical professionals, and Black-owned businesses that are allied to the medical community." Fueled by her own search for Black medical practices, her hope is to "bridge the gap between sought-after Black doctors and patients looking to get healed or serviced by someone who looks like them," according to an article by BlackBusiness.com.
“I created this platform out of my own frustration," Paige explains. "Upon researching my new primary care physician I discovered she was 12 minutes away from my home. If that is happening to me I thought about how this is happening all across the country. Meanwhile, our black doctors are suffering from a lack of exposure which could potentially be the demise of their practice.”
Users can create their own profiles to search for a healthcare professional based on their needs. They would also have the opportunity to learn about the professional's expertise and experience before becoming a new patient. The site is currently enrolling medical providers to join their database at a low rate, and a YouTube channel is currently in the works to provide these professionals a platform to promote their practices. A membership tier is also being created for Black-owned medical staffing agencies to post job openings as well.
